Shades of Soul - Beyond Borders
This collection of award-winning shorts addresses the complexities of race, nationality, and identity in the African American diaspora. In "Soledad," chance plays a fortuitous role in the meeting of a freed slave and an exploited flamenco dancer. "The Station" tells of a misunderstanding between a young African American man who encounters two girls in rural Japan. The three hit men in "Young Americans" must navigate a maze of betrayal, revenge, and desire, while in "Black Sheep," an African American man teaching English in Japan finds a host of cultural differences obscuring his path. Finally, in "Aidas Awakening," a young Creole girl ushers in her womanhood by acknowledging her voodoo roots.
